Caitlin Clark surpasses Steph Curry to become single-season 3-point leader

MINNEAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark couldn’t quite contain her smile. With just less than nine minutes to go in the Hawkeyes 95-62 win over Penn State, Clark finally hit her first 3-point attempt after her first 11 on the evening had been a little short, a little long or just a little … off. She couldn’t help but laugh at herself as she ran back on defense, throwing her arms in the air and sticking her tongue out. As the crowd roared, she looked up at the fans, smiled and put her hands to her ears jokingly: I can’t hear you.

Only for Clark, could one say that an off night was three assists short of a triple double — 24 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists — but it was an off night because Clark shot 26 percent from the floor.

But, shooters shoot. And that’s what she continued to do. Clark finished with two 3-pointers. She surpassed Steph Curry as the new all-time leader in 3-point field goals for a Division I single season.

“I thought I did really good in this game of letting it go,” Clark said. “Sometimes, it’s hard to get up there and shoot the next one, but honestly, maybe that’s my poison sometimes — I’m just going to launch it….
