Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner, who was detained in Russia for 10 months last year, was in an “inappropriate and unfortunate” situation “orchestrated by a social media figure and provocateur” at the Dallas Airport, the WNBA said in a statement Saturday. Here’s what you need to know:
- The Mercury faced the Wings in Dallas on Friday, and the league said the incident occurred Saturday.
- The league said in its statement that it is gathering additional information and added that it “worked together with the Phoenix Mercury and BG’s team to ensure her safety during her travel.”
- Griner’s teammate Brianna Turner recounted the incident on Twitter, saying her “team nervously huddled in a corner unsure how to move about. We demand better.”
- Internet personality Alex Stein took responsibility for the incident, sharing a video snippet on Twitter of him shouting at Griner in the airport Saturday.
A league source tells the @TheAthleticWBB, that Alex Stein is believed to be the person who, in the WNBA’s words, was a “social media figure and provocateur” involved.
Stein has tweeted, “The WNBA has already made a statement condemning me before I even posted the video” https://t.co/Eb5pGGWfVY
