Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner opened up about her nearly 10-month detainment in Russia and the “mental lapse” that led to her arrest at a Moscow-area airport after authorities found less than one gram of hashish oil in vape canisters in her luggage.
In an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts that will air in a special “20/20” episode Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET, Griner said she “could just visualize everything I worked so hard for just crumbling and going away.”
“How did I make this mistake? How was I this absentminded?” Griner recalled thinking to herself when the cartridges were discovered in her bag.

Griner was arrested on Feb. 17, 2022, investigated for the “large-scale transportation of drugs,” and put on trial that July. Griner pleaded guilty to the drugs charges and told a judge that she unintentionally packed the hashish oil while rushing to prepare to go to Russia.
