Brittney Griner is officially moving on from the Phoenix Mercury.
Griner is signing a free-agent contract with the Atlanta Dream when free agency opens Sunday, ESPN’s Shams Charania and Alexa Phillipou first reported. The 34-year-old, who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Mercury in 2013, spent her entire 11-season career in Phoenix before testing free agency this year.
During her WNBA career, Griner has made nine All-Star games, won two defensive player of the year awards and one WNBA championship. She missed the 2022 season while being detained for 10 months in Russia.
In joining Atlanta, she should give the Dream a defensive anchor as they tries to get back to the postseason. Last year, the team finished the season with a 15-25 record, five games back of the Indiana Fever for the final spot in the playoffs.
