Brink’s blocks, fourth-quarter run lead Stanford past UCLA – JWS

It took a fourth-quarter run on Friday for No. 2 Stanford to pull away from No. 8 UCLA and take a 72-59 win.

The two teams were tied at halftime, 32-32, and Stanford led 51-49 at the end of the third quarter. It was in the fourth that the Cardinal made their move, going on a 15-0 run and outscoring the Bruins 21-10.

“At halftime I was disappointed with some of our shots,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “I thought people were rushing shots, not running our offense and turning the ball over. And then I think we settled down in the second half.”

Cameron Brink took over in the fourth quarter, scoring six points, pulling down eight rebounds and blocking six shots. In total, she had seven blocks – a career-high – as well as 12 points and 11 rebounds. Haley Jones had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

“I think we’re just scratching the surface of how good we can be. We’re just figuring out how to play people and who to play together,” VanDerveer said.

For the Bruins, it’s their largest loss of the season.
