Brett Gardner’s son died of carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities confirm

The death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, while on a family vacation in Costa Rica last month was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said. 

Miller Gardner died on March 21 while the family was staying at a resort. A toxicology report found high carboxyhemoglobin levels, a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning, along with other indications of carbon monoxide poisoning in the organs.

Randall Zúñiga, director of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, said at a news conference that high carbon monoxide levels were found in the room the family was staying in at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort. Zúñiga said the family stayed next to a room with a machine that may have caused the contamination.

In a statement in March, Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica said that several other family members got sick while on vacation, and that Miller died peacefully in his sleep.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,” the Gardners said in the statement. “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”
