The 127th Boston Marathon is set to be run on Monday, April 17, Patriots’ Day. Not to be confused with the New England Patriots, this is a holiday to commemorate the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the Revolutionary War.
It’s a day of great pride in Boston that continues to be celebrated long after the redcoats set foot on American soil. While the day has since become synonymous with an 11 a.m. first pitch at Fenway Park, blue-and-yellow Red Sox jerseys, a Mark Wahlberg movie and a marathon, Patriots’ Day is a way to celebrate history in the region.
At 9 a.m. in Hopkinton on Monday, the tradition continues. As always, runners will finish on Boylston Street near the Boston Public Library. The 26.2-mile trek has withstood the test of time and tragedy — making it a sign of strength and a source of joy for everyone involved.
The 2022 winners included Evans Chebet (men’s open), Peres Jepchirchir (women’s open), Daniel Romanchuk (men’s wheelchair), Manuela Schär (women’s wheelchair), Alfredo Delossantos (men’s handcycles), Wendy Larsen (women’s handcycles), Michael Roeger (men’s para athletics) and Lisa Thompson (women’s para athletics).
