The quarterfinals of the Big Ten women’s lacrosse tournament have concluded and it’s down to the final four teams duking it out for a shot at the conference title and a berth in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Northwestern received the lone bye to the semis and is set to face No. 5 Johns Hopkins, which upset No. 4 Michigan in overtime. Maeve Barker had two goals and one assist in the 10-9 quarterfinal win, and goalkeeper Madison Doucette, a former Wildcat, had nine saves.
No. 2 Penn State beat No. 7 Ohio State 15-13 to move on to the semifinals. Gretchen Gilmore led the Nittany Lions with four goals and one assist, and Kayla Abernathy pulled in 13 draw controls—as many as the entire Ohio State roster.
They will play No. 6 Rutgers, which upset No. 3 Maryland 9-8 in their quarterfinal matchup. Tewaaraton nominee Cassidy Spilis scored four goals on six shots, and goalkeeper Sophia Cardello made 15 saves in the victory.
Northwestern’s Izzy Scane is only six goals away from breaking Charlotte North’s NCAA record of 358 goals. If Scane does it, she will do it in fewer games, as North did it in 87 and Scane has only played 78. She’s averaging 4.3 goals per game this season, so there’s little doubt the record will be hers soon enough.
