Biden Administration to wade into debate about college athletes’ economic rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Biden Administration is ready to wade into the debate about the economic rights of college athletes. The White House will hold an event on Wednesday with former college football players, including Andrew Luck, to discuss revenue sharing, safety standards and athletes having a voice in decisions, according to a White House official. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The White House has remained on the sidelines as the NCAA and its member conferences have lobbied Congress for legislation on several topics that ranged from regulating the name, image and likeness marketplace to athletes’ employee status. The NCAA and its conferences have asked Congress to prevent athletes from being recognized as employees amid mounting legal challenges to the contrary. But the Biden White House had been silent on what it thought about any of these bills.
  • Now the administration is set to weigh in. The White House event will feature former players and advocates and is expected to highlight how it feels athletes should be treated fairly, including financially, the official said.
  • Luck, a former Stanford and Indianapolis Colts quarterback, is one of six former college football players set to attend. Desmond Howard, Ryan Clark and Rod Gilmore are the other familiar names….
