Beth Mead returns to England Women squad, Ellie Roebuck drops out

Beth Mead has been named in the England Women squad for December’s Nations League fixtures for the first time since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury 12 months ago.

The Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner missed the Lionesses’ run to the World Cup final due to the injury but after making her first Women’s Super League start of the season during Arsenal’s win over Brighton on Sunday she has been rewarded with a recall to Sarina Wiegman’s squad.

There is no place for former first-choice goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck, who has lost the Manchester City No 1 spot this season to 19-year-old Khiara Keating.

Aston Villa defender Lucy Parker, who withdrew from last month’s squad due to an ankle injury, and Manchester City forward Jess Park also drop out.

Mead suffered an ACL injury against Manchester United in November 2022 and has been eased back into club action this season. Wiegman said she was “not close” to making the squad for last month’s camp, but after featuring in all four of Arsenal’s fixtures in November she is back in the 23.
