Ben Shelton started the 2025 season with good feelings and reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, defeating several very dangerous opponents and yielding only to world number 1 Jannik Sinner (who lifted the trophy at Melbourne Park for the second year in a row).
The American ace had a good chance in the first Masters 1000 of the season – the ‘BNP Paribas Open’ in Indian Wells – because the new surface was very suitable for his game. The very high rebounds favored Ben’s serve, who said he felt very comfortable on court since his first practice session.
The local idol played a great tournament supported by his fans and went all the way to the quarterfinals, where his run was interrupted by Jack Draper in straight sets. It was perhaps legitimate to expect something more from Shelton, but the regrets are not so many if you consider that the young Briton played impressive tennis throughout the tournament winning the first Masters 1000 of his career.
