Why Antonucci’s accomplishment is so significant
Thirty female trainers have brought a horse to a Triple Crown race. Until Saturday, none had won. Antonuci made history as her Peter Pan winner Arcangelo got a great ride along the rail from Castellano to win the Belmont Stakes.
Although women are common around the track, many working as exercise riders, the front-facing side of the sport remains a heavily male dominant profession. Only 10 other women have even trained a Belmont entrant in the race’s 155 years.
Fittingly history was made as the New York track celebrated the 50th anniversary win of Secretariat.
