Barcelona Women have been kicked out of the Copa de la Reina for fielding an illegible player in their round-of-16 win over Osasuna.
Geyse Ferreira started and scored during Barcelona’s 9-0 victory two weeks ago, but Osasuna claimed that the 24-year-old should have been ineligible for the match.
Ferreira was shown a red card while playing for Madrid CFF last season and therefore should have served her suspension during the Osasuna match.
Osasuna lodged a complaint with the Spanish FA (RFEF), which on Tuesday expelled Barcelona from the competition.
An RFEF statement confirmed that Osasuna will go through to the quarter-finals instead of Barcelona, with the Catalan club also fined €1001. Barcelona have 10 days to appeal against the decision.
Sevilla have also been kicked out for the same reason as Barcelona, after Villarreal lodged a complaint over the participation of Nagore Calderon. Sevilla had won their match 1-0, with Calderon used as a substitute.
The RFEF ruling means Barcelona will not be able to defend their Copa de la Reina crown, having won the competition for three consecutive seasons.
Barcelona, though, are on track to retain the Primera Division as they sit seven points clear of second-placed Levante having played a game fewer.
