Barcelona Femeni head coach Jonatan Giraldez has informed the club of his decision to leave at the end of the season.
Despite Barcelona’s intention to renew his contract, Giraldez has not accepted their proposal and has decided to leave.
Although the 32-year-old has informed the board and coaching staff of his decision, the players were not aware.
Giraldez has received a bigger offer from the NWSL and the financial proposal made to him by Barcelona was below expectations.
The Spaniard is looking forward to a change of league and a change of scenery now that he has already won everything with Barcelona. He led the club to the second Champions League title in their history last season, his first as head coach and his second since joining, and has won Liga F and the League Cup in both of his full seasons in charge, as well as the Copa de la Reina in his debut campaign.
Giraldez will become the second major departure from Barcelona after sporting director Markel Zubizarreta decided to leave a few months ago. The club also still has important players — including Alexia Putellas, Sandra Panos, Asisat Oshoala, Mapi Leon, Lucy Bronze, Marta Torrejon, Gemma Font and Mariona Caldentey — whose contract renewals are not yet finalised.
