We’re always sad to see the end of the Olympics looming. But tonight’s action on the track at the Stade de France will be replayed and remembered long after the Closing Ceremony. The Team GB women’s runners have put in an astounding effort, walking away with two more medals for their collection.

1500m final

First up was the women’s 1500m final, featuring two brilliant Brits: Laura Muir and Georgia Bell. A leading pack was quickly established, with Bell bringing up the rear as they put distance between themselves and the remaining competitors. Not one to be left behind, Muir picked up the pace to rejoin the pack. She easily slotted into 5th place behind Bell, in 4th, as they headed towards the final straight.

It looked like Team GB would just miss out on a medal place. But a sensational sprint from Bell had her crossing the finish line just ahead of Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji. In addition to her well-earned bronze, she also set a new 1500m national record of 3:52:61.

We’re thrilled for Bell. She’s had an incredible journey, that only began a year or so ago. Up until 2023, running was all about “fun and fitness” for her. She loved running (an albeit speedy) parkun while working full-time in cyber-security. Her parkrun times caught the eye of Keely…

Even before the 4 x 100m women’s relay started, we were on the edge of our seats. I think all of us have faint memories of panicked baton passing at sports day. The worry of fumbling the pass, the awareness of the crowds watching, the desperation not to be the person that drops it. And we can only imagine how amplified these feelings are when running the fastest of the relays at the Paris Olympics. Gulp.

Dina Asher-Smith, Imani Lansiquot, Amy Hunt and Daryll Neita were taking on this stress for Team GB. Despite the rain, they got off to a flying start. They sped through two changeovers, leaving Amy Hunt leading the race as they raced towards the final leg.

This is where those sports day fears could well have cost Team GB everything. A difficult changeover happened between Hunt and Neita. But that wasn’t going to stop our girls: Neita absolutely powered her way down the final straight to snag a silver medal for the team.

While it wasn’t the gold that the commentators were sure they had been on track for, we couldn’t be prouder of our runners. They showed how much grit and talent Team GB women have, even when things don’t quite go to plan.

And the relay wasn’t the only medal for us in the stadium tonight. Katerina Johnson-Thompson crossed the finish line of the…

Team GB’s hopes were high last night as track superstars Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita were poised for a tense 200m final at the Stade de France.

After missing out on the 100m final, Dina’s hopes were pinned on a strong 200m race. Teammate Neita, who made it to the final but missed out on a bronze medal by a few fractions of a second, had unfinished business with new 100m Olympic champion Julien Alfred of St Lucia. Both Brit athletes had every reason to give it their all.

Asher-Smith came out as strong as ever, but couldn’t quite keep at full power in the final stretch. She came fourth with Neita following close behind in fifth, both runners performing fantastically.

Team USA’s Gabby Thomas, who has been running incredibly well all season, took the gold by some stretch after pushing ahead in the final seconds of the race. Fellow US athlete Brittany Brown joined her on the podium in third place while rising star Julien Alfred bagged herself a silver medal.

Alfred’s 100m gold and 200m silver are St Lucia’s first ever Olympic medals. On the other side of the coin, Thomas and Brown’s respective gold and bronze add to Team USA’s huge 2024 haul, securing their place at the top of the medal table.

Team GB have won their first gold medal in athletics at the Paris Olympics this evening – and it was Keely Hodgkinson who did it, with an astounding effort in the 800m final.

We had high hopes for Hodgkinson after she finished first in yesterday’s semi-final, and we know that she had gold in her sights. “I’m sick of silver!” she said. “I want gold.” Even watching her warm-up, it was clear that she was full of confidence and ready to run a tactical race.

She quickly settled at the front of the pack just after the 200m mark, and held her lead sometimes by just shoulder’s distance until they reached the final straight. At that point, she took off, leaving the rest of the runners in her wake as they sprinted to the finish line.

She crossed the line first with a time of 1:56:72, followed by Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia and Mary Moraa of Kenya.

We are absolutely chuffed for her. After winning silver at Tokyo, we know how much she wanted to get the gold – and get it she did.

We can’t wait to see how Team GB will do over the next few days of athletics – watch this space for more updates!

After all the excitement of gymnastics last week, the athletics are now front and centre at Paris Olympics 2024. The Stade de France has already seen some thrilling events, and there are only more to come.

While we love any athletics action, we are of course rooting for Team GB. So, how are they doing so far? Unfortunately, it’s been a bit of a slow start, with some of our favourite women runners facing challenges on their way to a medal. But it’s definitely not all bad news, and there’s a lot to look forward to. Keep reading for all the updates you need to know ahead of this week’s Olympics events…

Women’s 100m

Things were looking great for Team GB women runners after the first 100m heats. Daryll Neita finished first in her heat, with Dina Asher-Smith second and Imani Lansiquot third in their respective heats.

Unfortunately, only Neita made it through to the final, with Asher-Smith and Lansiquot both coming 5th in their semi-finals. We’re so proud of them both, but Asher-Smith was visibly disappointed with the result. After the race, she told the press how frustrated she feels, especially as her training had been going so well. Of course, she still has another chance at a medal in the 200m later this week. But, at the time, this was of little solace. We’re…

We’re pretty old hats at the Olympics now. We know how it all works, what athletes we can’t wait to watch and which finals we need to clear our schedules for. But this year, we have a new and exciting element to get our heads round that could make all the difference the running podiums: repechage.

You might have heard this term being bandied about already during coverage of Paris Olympics 2024, but it’ll really come into play when we get into the athletics, which start later on this week. But what on earth is repechage and how does it work? And, more importantly, what does it mean for our fave Team GB female runners? We found out….

What is repechage?

Repechage is a qualifying system that has been used in wrestling and other sports for a while.

It changes the format of qualifying for semi-finals and beyond. Essentially, it gives a second chance to athletes who have been knocked out in earlier rounds.

What running events will it apply to at Paris 2024?

This year, a repechage round is being included in Olympic athletics for the first time. It’ll happen on all individual track events from 200m to 1500m. It could make all the difference to some of our fave GB runners!

How is it different from previous Olympics?

Previously in the Olympics (and other track-based…

Team GB superstars at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Dina Asher-Smith makes her return

This year sees the return of legendary sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, after a rocky Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 28-year-old Brit shocked viewers when she didn’t make the 100m finals in the last Games, and she went on to pull out of the 200m event. But, after revealing that she’d been struggling with a hamstring injury, she made her come back in the 4×100 relay, claiming her second Olympic bronze medal (the first for the same event in 2016).

After reclaiming her European 100m title in Rome, she’s all set for a strong performance in Paris. Check her out in the 100m and 200m, with heats starting from Sunday 4th August.

Can Daryll Neita make the finals again?

During Dina’s difficult time in the Toyko 2020 Games, Daryll Neita really stepped up and made herself a household name. When all hope was lost for a Brit in the final, she qualified with an incredible time of 11:00, but…

When it comes to running alone, especially for women, safety should always be a priority. If you’ve ever wondered if there are things you can do to feel and stay safer, rest assured – there are several strategies you can implement right away, and some to consider for the future.

This month, we spoke to defence expert and World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Joanna Ziobronowicz. She also holds a UCL Master’s in Psychology and Linguistics, Her new book, which is out on 9th July, is called She Fights Back. It offers self-defence strategies from both a psychological and physical perspective in her new book. We asked her for her tips on staying safe while out running alone…

Joanna’s guide to women’s safety while running

1. Plan your run and route

“You may already have heard of a few preventative measures that can help you stay safe during solo runs,” says Joanna. “These include choosing well-populated routes, ideally during daylight hours for better visibility. Being familiar with your chosen route can help you plan exit strategies and identify places where you can run toward safety,” she says.

If you go running during darker hours, Joanna suggests you pick routes that are well-lit rather than dark alleys, which pose a higher risk to your safety. “You…
