CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis team is using its off weekend before the start of the NCAA tournament to gather for a much-loved event.

The Cavaliers’ annual awards banquet is Saturday at the Rotunda, where one of the program’s most distinguished alumnae, Cindy Brinker Simmons, will present the award for the team’s most improved player. Brinker Simmons, who lives in Dallas, has done so since early in Sara O’Leary’s tenure as head coach.

“It just felt so fitting with the way she takes on life and has such an amazing attitude about it, no matter what is thrown her way,” said O’Leary, who’s in her seventh season at UVA.

When she played at Virginia, she was Cindy Brinker. That changed when she married Bob Simmons in 1990, but she remains as upbeat and exuberant as when she arrived on Grounds in 1975, not long after the University had gone co-ed.

“She’s the best. I love her,” O’Leary said. “Every time that she comes to Charlottesville, we grab coffee or she’ll come over to our house for dinner. I just think she’s a wonderful person and has a lot of joy and she’s super kind, and I look up to her a lot. She’s accomplished so many amazing things in…

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team (22-4) suffered a 4-1 loss against North Carolina (22-3) in the final of the 2024 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday (April 21) on the indoor courts at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

North Carolina won the doubles point and took a 3-0 lead in the match before grad student Natasha Subhash logged a victory on court three to make it 3-1. North Carolina clinched the victory with a win on court six.

North Carolina opened play by winning on all three doubles courts, with courts one and three finishing almost simultaneously.

Senior Hibah Shaikh showed early resilience for the Cavaliers, bouncing back from her doubles loss to take her first set 6-0 on court two against Elizabeth Scotty. Subhash and juniors Elaine Chervinsky and Mélodie Collard all won their first sets, giving the Cavaliers four of six first sets.

Scotty won her second two sets 6-1, 6-2 to put UNC up 2-0. The Tar Heels added a straight-set win on court four to make it 3-0.

Subhash dropped her second set 6-2 against Carson Tanguilig, but came back in the third set with a 6-3 win to get the Cavaliers on the scoreboard.

Just as Subhash tallied her victory, sophomore Annabelle Xu took her second set 7-5 against No. 7 Fiona Crawley to force a third…

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team (22-3) won 4-0 against Florida State (16-8) in the semifinals of the 2024 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday (April 20) at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Virginia won the doubles point and singles matches on courts two, three and six to take the match. Grad student Natasha Subhash clinched the victory for the Cavaliers.

Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the championship, will face top-seeded North Carolina (21-3) on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the final. It will stream online on ACCNX.

Senior Sara Ziodato and sophomore Meggie Navarro opened the match with a 6-3 win on the third doubles court. Florida State took the top court 7-5. Court two went to a tiebreaker to decide the point with senior Hibah Shaikh and Subhash winning it 7-2 to give UVA the 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers took four of six first sets in singles.

Sophomore Mélodie Collard closed out a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six to give UVA a 2-0 lead minutes after courts four and five had finished their first sets. Shaikh won a break point at deuce on court two to finish a 6-3, 6-0 win to put UVA up 3-0.

Subhash defeated Anna Arkadianou 6-2, 6-2 on court three to secure the victory.

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team (21-3) won 4-0 against Notre Dame (17-9) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship on Friday (April 19) at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The match, delayed by two hours due to wet courts, started at 8 p.m. on Friday night. The Cavaliers took the doubles point and two singles matches in straight sets to build up a 3-0 lead. Senior Sara Ziodato clinched the match with a three-set victory on court four.

The 2-seed Cavaliers advance to face 3-seed Florida State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.

Juniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky opened the match with a 6-2 win on the top doubles court. Ziodato and sophomore Meggie Navarro clinched the point with a 6-2 win on court three.

In singles, Chervinsky won 6-2, 6-1 on court five to put UVA up 2-0. Grad student Natasha Subhash followed right after with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court three to give UVA a 3-0 lead.

Ziodato recovered from dropping her first set against Nibi Ghosh 6-3 by taking the second 6-0. She won the third 6-1 to clinch the victory for the Cavaliers.

Florida State defeated 6-seed Miami 4-1 to advance to the semifinals.

CARY, N.C. – The No. 4 Virginia women’s tennis team (20-3, 12-1 ACC) is competing at the 2024 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship, being held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Virginia earned a double-bye and will begin play on Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. against either No. 7 Notre Dame.

The semifinals will take place on Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m. The championship match is Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Virginia women’s tennis juniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky were named the ACC Doubles Team of the Week while sophomore Annabelle Xu was named the ACC Player of the week in honors announced Tuesday (April 16) by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Collard and Chervinsky closed out the regular season with a pair of impressive victories on the top doubles court. In last Friday’s match against No. 19 Miami, the tandem opened the pivotal contest with an emphatic 6-0 victory on the top court over the No. 29 team of Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong. In Sunday’s finale, they clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win against No. 30 Vic Allen and Millie Bissett of Florida State.

On Friday, Xu logged the highest-ranked singles victory of her collegiate career, defeating No. 9 Alexa Noel of Miami 6-2, 0-6, 10-7, on the top court.

This is the third ACC Doubles Team of the Week honor this season for Collard and Chervinsky and the first honor for Xu.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s tennis team (20-3, 12-1 ACC) closed out the regular season with a 4-2 victory against No. 23 Florida State (15-7, 9-4 ACC) on Sunday(April 14) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

With the victory, the Cavaliers finish conference play with a 12-1 mark, tying for first place in the final standings with North Carolina. This is the second time in program history that the Cavaliers were the ACC Regular Season Co-Champions, joining the 2014 team.

Due to a head-to-head tiebreaker, UNC will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship with UVA earning the No. 2 seed, but both share the regular-season title.

Grad student Natasha Subhash clinched Sunday’s victory for the Cavaliers. She was one of three players lauded before the match in the annual Senior Day celebration.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 5 Virginia women’s tennis team (19-3, 11-1 ACC) won 6-1 against No. 19 Miami (9-6, 7-4 ACC) on Friday (April 12) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

The Cavaliers won the doubles point and took the first three singles matches to clinch at 4-0. After Miami picked up a point on court five, the Cavaliers added a pair of victories in 10-point third-set tiebreakers on the top two courts to close out the 6-1 victory.

Senior Sara Ziodato won the clinching point.

The match was played in gusty winds. During the doubles point, a brief rain shower blew through the area, halting play for half an hour.

Juniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky got the Cavaliers off to a hot start, winning 6-0 on the top court before the rain delay. Grad student Natasha Subhash and senior Hibah Shaikh held a 5-2 lead on court two when play was suspended. After the delay, they closed out a 6-2 victory to clinch the point.

Subhash logged her most dominant singles victory of the season, winning 6-0, 6-0 on court four to put UVA up 2-0. Collard followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win on six to give UVA a 3-0 lead. Ziodato downed Antonia Blazert 6-1, 6-2 on court three to clinch the victory.
