Another matchup between two strong programs — Stanford and Minnesota — will round out an exciting start to the 2024 women’s college volleyball season. 

The Cardinal and Golden Gophers will meet on the first day of the inaugural Women’s College Volleyball Showcase. The two last battled early in the 2023 season, when Stanford defeated Minnesota in four sets. Competitors Wisconsin and Texas will also join the showcase in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sunday and Monday

Caitlin Clark spoke with her dominant performance in the Fever’s win Friday against the Sky, telling everyone why she deserves to be name Rookie of the Year.

Both Clark and Angel Reese mentioned before the game that the award is the least of their worries, but putting up a career-high 31 points and 12 assists in a 100-81 win was certainly a statement from Clark on the matter.

She wasn’t alone for Indiana — Kelsey Mitchell contributed heavily with 23 points of her own, and Nalyssa Smith tacked on 14 as well. As a team, the Fever shot a whopping 48.5% from the field and 44.8% from 3-point range, with its largest lead sitting at 27.

Chicago was unable to keep up with Indiana’s high-firing offense. Michaela Onyenwere led the Sky with 20 points, while Reese achieved her 23rd double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, passing Tina Charles for most by a first-year player in league history.

The Fever can now officially claim the regular season series against its rival with a 3-1 record in head-to-head matchups this year. The team sits at .500 as Indiana seeks its first postseason appearance since 2016. Prospects are looking less positive for Chicago, which now sits at 11-20 with less than 10 games to go before the playoffs.

Ever since the WNBA All-Star break, Caitlin Clark has been on a tear. The Fever are 4-1 in the three week period, and Clark has scored 19-plus points in all five contests. 

In the team’s last game against the Connecticut Sun, a narrow 84-80 win, nine of Clark’s 19 points came from behind the arc. One of her threes broke the rookie record for 3-pointers in a single season, marking her 86th basket from deep.

Friday’s matchup against the Sky is the fourth time this season Clark has played against fellow rookie Angel Reese. As the Rookie of the Year race heats up toward the playoffs, all eyes will be on what could be the final rivalry meeting between the two budding stars this year.

The NHL world woke up to awful news Friday morning, as Blue Jackets star winger Johnny Gaudreau died Thursday night in a reported bicycle accident in New Jersey. 

He was 31 years old. 

“The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.

“… We send our most heart-felt condolences to his wife Meredith; their children, Noa and Johnny; his parents, Guy and Jane; and sisters Kristen and Katie. And we grieve alongside his teammates, members of the Blue Jackets and Flames organizations, his many friends in hockey and countless fans around the world for whom he created indelible memories on and off the ice.”

An outdoor hockey game in a Chicago winter? Why not. Bundle up, because there’s plenty of that in January 2025.

A few days after hosting the NHL Winter Classic, Wrigley Field will be home to more hockey for The Frozen Confines. Three Big Ten matchups will play over the two-day doubleheader along with one WCHA face off. Participating teams include Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Michigan State as well as the women’s teams from Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Chicago will truly be filled wit the best of the best teams on January 3 and 4. All six men’s teams were ranked in the top 20 nationally last season with the Wolverines moving onto the Frozen Four for their third straight year. The Badgers and Buckeyes have combined to win the last five women’s championships, so that game could very well be a preview of the next title game.

In order to create space for a pass, he invented the Iverson cut — a cut by a player running off screens from two teammates, who are usually positioned at the elbows.

Michael Chandler is eager to fight Conor McGregor and move past their longstanding UFC rivalry for good.

Chandler and McGregor have been linked to a UFC fight for several years now, and even served as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter in anticipation of their meeting in the Octagon. However, when they were finally booked to fight at UFC 303 in June, McGregor was forced off the card with a toe injury, and the status of the bout was once again cast in uncertainty.

Now, after waiting for years for McGregor to heal up and get back in the Octagon, Chandler seems eager to move onto the next chapter of his career.

SEC basketball legends face off for the final time this season as the Aces host the Sky for one last showing during the 2024 WNBA season.

Rather than Las Vegas’s usual Michelob Ultra Arena, this matchup will be at the T-Mobile Arena, a venue nearly twice as big in the heart of the city’s Strip. And the game should live up to those standards.

In the teams’ last meeting in Sin City, their final game before the Olympic break, the Sky pulled out a 93-85 win over the two-time defending champions. Chennedy Carter went off for a season-high 34 points. However, the Aces got their revenge recently with a 77-75 nailbiting win. Carter drilled a 3-pointer to tie it up in the final seconds, but A’ja Wilson went end-to-end for a literal last second layup. And Las Vegas walked it off. 

It should be another thriller in Las Vegas as Wilson and Angel Reese battle it out. The Aces are all but guaranteed to make the playoffs while the Sky need to keep the gas to do so, and a win over the Aces would be the confidence booster they need.
