Anson Dorrance, whose 21 NCAA championships are the most by a head coach in any Division I sport in college athletics history, is retiring after 45 seasons directing the women’s soccer program at the University of North Carolina.

Dorrance informed Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham of his intention to retire on Friday, Aug. 9, and told the team Sunday afternoon.

The Tar Heels open the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Denver. Associate head coach Damon Nahas will lead the team this season as interim head coach. Cunningham will direct a national search.

“As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith’s basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well,” says Dorrance. “He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to recharge his batteries prior to the next season. After last season I initially was excited about the chance to bolster our roster, which we most certainly have done, but as preseason training camp went on, I realized I didn’t have the same energy it takes to give 100% to this year’s team. The first women’s soccer national championship was awarded to North Carolina 36 years ago, in 1982, for its 2-0 win over Central Florida. 

Since that inaugural NCAA DI women’s soccer national championship, 11 teams have finished the season at the top of the sport. The 2023 season ended with Florida State moving into second place with its fourth national championship in school history and its second in the past three years.

Many of the players on team USA women’s basketball’s roster for the Paris 2024 Olympics played in March Madness during their college careers. Watch some of the best NCAA tournament highlights from Team USA here.

The biggest stars in women’s basketball take the court in Phoenix on Saturday, July 20 for the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game.

Because it’s an Olympic year, the game format will be a little different than the usual Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference. Instead, the USA Basketball Women’s National Team will face WNBA All-Stars. The WNBA representatives came from a combination of voting from fans, players, media and coaches. The game will be played at 8:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC. Each team has 12 players.

Head coach of the US Women’s National Soccer Team Emma Hayes has announced the 18-player roster plus four alternates for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Out of the 22-player squad, 19 are former NCAA student-athletes representing 11 different colleges. Stanford leads with five players, followed by North Carolina (three) and Penn State and Florida State tallying two apiece.

USA Basketball will bring three former college basketball stars and one current NCAA player to Paris to defend their gold medal in women’s 3×3 basketball at the 2024 Olympics.

The four players represent Stanford, TCU, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Jennifer Rizzotti, president of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, will serve as the head coach, and she will be assisted by Tammi Reiss. Rizzotti played at UConn and was previously the head coach at Hartford and George Washington. Reiss was a four-year star at Virginia and is now the head coach at Rhode Island.

Cameron Brink

Brink dominant college career led to her being selected with the No. 2 pick of the 2024 WNBA draft. In college, Brink won a national championship in 2021, was a three-time All-American and the 2024 national defensive player of the year.
