The three women’s golf team members representing Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics have been finalized, including two former NCAA athletes: Rose Zhang (Stanford) and Lilia Vu (UCLA). Nelly Korda rounds out the team — she turned professional at 18 years old and took gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Women’s golf Olympic competition will take place Aug. 7-10 at Le Golf National.

The 2024 Paris Olympics mark just the fourth time that women’s golf has been played on the Olympic stage. Women’s golf was first played at the 1900 Paris Olympics, featuring 10 competitors from both France and the United States. American Margaret Abbott won gold, but interestingly enough, she was never aware of her feat as it was unclear that the women’s golf tournament was even part of the Games. Women’s golf took a hiatus from the Olympics from 1904-2012, making an appearance for the first time in a century at the Rio 2016 Olympics and then again at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Welcome back, DII sports fans. There is just one week remaining in the 2023-24 season. Angelo State is in the national semifinals and one win away from the chance to play for a repeat DII baseball national championship. I also caught up with UT Tyler to discuss championship softball.

The UT Tyler Patriot way: ‘We really did it!’

On Sunday, May 25, the UT Tyler Patriots slammed the door on yet another strong season. Unlike the previous two years that ended in the national semifinals, the Patriots swept their way to the title, holding Western Washington to just one run in a two-game sweep of the national championship series.

It has been quite the run for the Patriots. UT Tyler, which won the DIII softball national championship in 2016, slowly began its transition to DII in 2019. Playing its Lone Star Conference foes for the first time in 2020, the Patriots were off and running, making the jump from DIII look relatively easy, sitting at 17-3 when play came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

Head coach Mike Reed looks back to the 2018 junior class as part of the reason the transition has gone so smoothly. Even though schools are ineligible for the postseason as transitioning schools, the seniors all still decided to stay.

Massachusetts won the first women’s lacrosse national championship when they took down Trenton State 9-6 in 1982. Twelve teams have won the title since that inaugural game. The 2019 season ended with a familiar name on top — Maryland. The Terrapins picked up their 14th national championship, the most in NCAA DI women’s lacrosse history.

Championships: 1986, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019

The Terps have dominated women’s college lacrosse championships with double the amount of championships than the next team. They won seven in a row from 1995-2001 under head coach Cindy Timchal, and have now won five championships in the last decade under head coach Cathy Reese.
