Australia’s Sam Kerr fit to play, available for Women’s World Cup after calf injury: ‘I feel good’

Date:

Australia striker Sam Kerr is fit to play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and is “feeling good,” she said Saturday. The 29-year-old was ruled out of the co-host’s first two group matches with a calf injury sustained on the eve of the tournament.

“I’m definitely going to be available,” Kerr said. “But how we decide to use that is not to be given to the opposition is the main thing.”

Coach Tony Gustavsson had said he would make a late call on whether Australia’s all-time top scorer would be ready to face Canada in their final group game on Monday.

Gustavsson said the Chelsea forward would do “anything she can” to feature, but admitted the timeframe would be “tight.”

Kerr, speaking to the media from Brisbane, said, “I would love to tell you guys everything, but you know yourself being in sport a long time, that’s a massive thing that the opposition wants to know, and like Tony (Gustavsson) said yesterday, it’s going to go down to the wire.”
