Australia beat Russia – who hosted the tournament in 1994 – to win the hosting rights, capping off a strong few years for the Opals who have continued to be a world force in women’s basketball.
The Opals finished as runners up in the 2018 edition, only falling short to powerhouses the USA and are currently ranked second in the world behind the Americans.
“Congratulations @BasketballAUS [Australian Basketball Association] & #Sydney… Australia will host the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022,” FIBA said on its Twitter account.
“Basketball Australia and the Russian Basketball Federation were the two finalists bidding to host FIBA’s women’s flagship event two years from now,” FIBA said in a statement on its website.
Australia’s men’s team, the Boomers, are reportedly bidding to host the tournament in 2027.
