Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly named WSL player of the season

Aston Villa Women forward Rachel Daly has been named the Women’s Super League player of the season.

The 31-year-old has excelled as a striker this season for Carla Ward’s side, scoring 21 goals in 21 games, and is only one strike behind Vivianne Miedema’s record of WSL goals in a single season, with one game still to play.

Daly won the award ahead of Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Guro Reiten, Manchester United’s Ona Batlle, Leah Galton and Kirsty Hanson, Manchester City’s Bunny Shaw, and Arsenal’s Frida Maanum.

In a video posted by the club on social media, Daly said: “This is not for me, but it is for everyone.“I am nothing without you guys (her teammates). I said it the other day and it’s true so thanks, guys.”

The versatile England international’s successful club campaign comes after her performances at left-back helped her nation win Euro 2022 last summer.

Despite thriving for her country as a full-back, her performances as a striker this season have given England manager Sarina Wiegman food for thought ahead of the World Cup in July.

Daly, who has previously played for Leeds United, Lincoln Ladies, and West Ham United, joined Villa last summer after seven years at NWSL side Houston Dash.
