The scoreline read Manchester United 4 Liverpool 0. It was an emphatic victory for United against one of their Women’s Super League rivals and a performance which deserved praise.
“Morale will be driven by success on the pitch,” the club’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe told the United We Stand (UWS) fanzine on Saturday. “If we’re losing matches then I don’t expect morale to be good and if we’re winning matches then it should be good. We want people here who are either happy or unhappy on a Monday morning depending on what happened at the weekend.”
Whatever you think of such a work culture, the women’s statement win is unlikely to have garnered much recognition from Ratcliffe given he told UWS: “There’s only so much you can do and our focus has been on the men’s team. If not, you get spread too thinly. We need to sort out the main issue, the men’s team.”
Ratcliffe has been consistently frank with his comments regarding his lack of attention dedicated to the women’s team, messages which left members of the dressing room disappointed last season.
