Aryna Sabalenka is absolutely happy to have made it “a really tight” battle for the world No. 1 with Iga Swiatek but insists that she will do everything she can to continue with her current mindset and now allow herself to be distracted at the WTA Finals.
On Sunday, Sabalenka bagged her third Wuhan title but also 1,000 ranking points after beating Zheng Qinwen 6-4 5-7 6-3 in the final.
After Wimbledon, the Pole was still significantly ahead of the current world No. 2. But since then, Sabalenka has won the US Open, as well as the WTA 1000 tournaments in Wuhan and Cincinnati. And now, Swiatek – who missed Beijing and Wuhan – is just 69 ranking points ahead of her biggest rival.
Since it is a very small margin, it is clear that the battle for the top spot will come down to who does better at the WTA Finals in Riyadh between November 02-09.
“Yeah, that’s really tight ranking right now. Really nice to see. I always say of course it’s one of the goals, but I prefer to focus on myself and just keep working hard. We’ll see after the Finals if I was good enough this season to become world No. 1,” the 26-year-old Belarusian said.
