Aryna Sabalenka took a shot at the US Open crowd following her opening win in Australia, saying she would have probably won the 2023 US Open if she had a crowd like that behind her back.
On Wednesday, world No. 2 Sabalenka made a triumphant start to her 2024 season, beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-3 6-0 in the Brisbane second round. Throughout the match, Sabalenka was receiving notable support from the Brisbane crowd.
During the 2022 US Open – in which Sabalenka made the final before losing to Coco Gauff – the Belarusian evidently wasn’t the happiest with how the crowd was supporting or treating her. After losing to Gauff in the final and receiving a cheer from the crowd during the trophy presentation, Sabalenka asked the crowd where was that support during the match.
“I’m super happy to be back in Brisbane, Australia. I really missed you so much in all the Slams. Guys, if I would have your support at the US Open, probably I would win that one. Can you come at the US Open next year?” Sabalenka said after her opening win in Brisbane.
