Aryna Sabalenka claims knowing there was a possibility of reaching the world No 1 didn’t negatively impact her Wimbledon semifinal performance. Heading into the Wimbledon semifinal against Ons Jabeur, Sabalenka knew she was a win away from overtaking Iga Swiatek at No 1.
But Sabalenka failed to get the job done against Jabeur as the Tunisian recovered from a set and a break down to beat the Belarusian 6-7 6-4 6-3. After the match, Sabalenka was asked if she was thinking about getting to No 1 during the Jabeur match.
“I wouldn’t say that I was thinking about that. I mean, for me it’s more about how you finish the year than during the year you’re first, second, you just go back and forth. For me it’s more about finish the year. I’ll keep pushing myself and do everything I can to finish this year as world No 1,” Sabalenka said.
