The Weekend That Was: October 23–25

Women's Sports Now · October 26, 2026

Another weekend, another reminder that the biggest stories in women's sports rarely wait for permission. The WNBA Finals are level again, the NWSL Shield race goes down to the final day, and a record fell in Kansas City. Here is what mattered most from October 23–25.

Valkyries grind their way back to level in the Finals

Three days after a 26-point drubbing in Game 3, Golden State remembered how it wins. The Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 67–62 in Game 4 on Saturday at State Farm Arena, leveling the WNBA Finals at 2–2 and taking home-court advantage back to San Francisco.

It was defense, not shooting, that did it. Golden State led 42–26 at halftime, forced 18 Atlanta turnovers, and held Angel Reese to eight points on 2-for-12 shooting after her record start to the series. Gabby Williams led the Valkyries with 17 points, and Tiffany Hayes scored all 13 of hers in the second half. Rhyne Howard led Atlanta with 19, but the Dream never fully recovered from that first-half hole. Game 5 is Monday night in San Francisco, and this series is now a best-of-three.

Gotham in front as the Shield race heads to Decision Day

Gotham FC moved closer to the NWSL Shield on Sunday with a 2–1 win over the Orlando Pride, while Kansas City Current beat the Washington Spirit 2–1 and San Diego Wave FC drew 2–2 with Boston Legacy FC. Gotham now leads the race, with one match to play.

Kansas City's win came with a piece of history: Croix Bethune recorded her 11th assist of the regular season, a new NWSL single-season record, setting up Vanessa DiBernardo in the 17th minute. San Diego, meanwhile, twice came back against Boston — Gia Corley leveled in the 51st minute before an own goal put the Wave ahead, only for Alba Caño's long-range strike in the 73rd minute to rescue a point for the visitors and keep San Diego's Shield hopes alive.

Elsewhere, Portland's win secured a playoff berth for the Thorns, and with it clinched places for Angel City, Kansas City and Utah as well. Denver kept its own hopes alive with a 6–1 victory, leaving the final postseason spot to come down to Denver, Seattle and North Carolina on Decision Day.

Montreal takes the Shield north of the border

There was silverware in Canada, too. The Montreal Roses won the Northern Super League Supporters' Shield with a dramatic victory over Ottawa. "This is just the beginning; now it's into the playoffs, and it's a whole other season," said Tanya Boychuk. For a first-season league, a Shield race that goes to the wire is exactly the advertisement it needed.

Indiana clean house in the front office

The weekend's biggest off-court news came from Indianapolis, where the Indiana Fever overhauled their front office: Kelly Krauskopf departed and Amber Cox was fired. The Fever have been one of the league's biggest stories for two years running, and whoever takes over now inherits both a spotlight and a roster puzzle. This is a reset, plain and simple — and resets are judged quickly.

College hoops: UConn on top again, JuJu back in the frame

With the college season about to tip off, the previews are telling a familiar story. UConn is the top seed in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll, and the Huskies' upgraded facilities were the talk of the weekend's previews. Meanwhile, JuJu Watkins earned an AP preseason All-American nod ahead of her return for USC in 2026–27 — a reminder that, whatever else changes in the women's game, its biggest names still move the needle before a ball is even tipped.

Off the pitch in Portland

Off the pitch, the weekend also brought an incident at Portland's match that has drawn wider attention: protesters were removed from the game, and the U.S. Department of Justice said it is reviewing what happened. It is a story still developing, and one worth watching for what it means for how clubs and leagues handle protests in the stands.

Back next Monday with the next weekend that was — after Game 5 in San Francisco and NWSL Decision Day.
