Arsenal midfielder Lia Walti will not play for the north London club again this season but “should be able to recover” for this summer’s Women’s World Cup.
Walti was substituted off in the second half of Arsenal’s Women’s Super League win over Everton during the week after a strong challenge from Aggie Beever-Jones, who was sent off.
Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall admitted after the game that Walti’s injury “did not look good” but gave a further update on the Switzerland international on Friday.
“She’s out for the season for us,” Eidevall confirmed. “The initial examination is that it’s not too bad.
“It’s not a multiple-month injury so she should be able to recover in time for the World Cup. That’s very important for her as a player and I’m happy for her that it wasn’t more serious because I was afraid it could be. Unfortunately, she can’t be on the pitch anymore for Arsenal this season.”
Beever-Jones, 19, apologised on social media for her challenge after the match, saying: “I struggle to put into words how upset I am at injuring another player. Most importantly, I meant no harm whatsoever to Lia Walti.”
