The medals have been handed out. The trophy has been lifted. The confetti is on the pitch.
But this is just the beginning.
Two players signify the journey this Arsenal side are on.
Leah Williamson, who sprinted across the pitch and embraced Alex Scott, is no stranger to this feeling. A first-team player since her promotion from the academy in 2014, she had already won five major trophies for Arsenal before they beat Chelsea 3-1 in the final of the Continental Cup at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
Then there’s Manuela Zinsberger, who threw her goalkeeper gloves into the stands. She has been an influential squad member since signing in 2019 but started the game with no silverware to her name in Arsenal colours.
This was not only Arsenal’s first trophy under Jonas Eidevall, but their first as a group in just under four years.
“It means so much,” Lia Walti said post-match.
“It gives us a lot of confidence. We always believed we were able to win trophies but there was always a little bit missing. Finally we put what we’re capable of on the pitch and it’s just amazing to see.”
