The third Community Shield meeting between Arsenal and Manchester City takes place five days before the start of the Premier League season as the top two in the division in 2022/23 contest the annual curtain-raiser for England’s top-flight football.
After being held at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium last year because of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, the game between the Premier League and FA Cup winners returns to Wembley Stadium, where City played little more than two months ago.
On that occasion, the top-flight champions won the FA Cup, which meant Arsenal became their opponents in the Community Shield by virtue of finishing second during a title race that had been close until the final weeks of the season.
Arsenal are the second-most successful team behing Manchester United in the history of the Community Shield, winning it five times fewer than the Red Devils’ 21 triumphs.
City’s six wins make them one of six teams to have won the shield more than four times, although they have not prevailed since beating Liverpool on penalties in 2019, losing 1-0 to Leicester in 2021 and 3-1 to the Reds in 2022.
