After Arsenal Women announced that head coach Jonas Eidevall has stepped down from his role at the club, interim manager Renee Slegers held her first press conference to address the media as she takes charge of the Gunners.
The Dutch coach signed with Arsenal as an assistant coach in September 2023 after succeeding Eidevall in his head coach position at Rosengard in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan. Slegers went on to win consecutive league titles with Rosengard in both 2021 and 2022.
Renee Slegers ‘shocked by the news’ of Jonas Eidevall’s departure
In quotes gathered by The Halfway Line, Slegers expressed that she was “shocked” to hear the news of Eidevall’s departure after being told by the club on Monday.
“I spoke to him yesterday afternoon and was shocked by the news. I was very sad because he has been a good leader for the staff and I worked with him before in Sweden and we worked really well together. I am very sad that it got to this point.”
Packing on the praise for Eidevall, Slegers expressed that “I feel a lot of respect for him, he has been very resilient for a long time. He has been working incredibly hard for a long time so all I feel is respect for him.”
