Arsenal boss Renee Slegers hails comeback against Real Madrid

LONDON — Arsenal manager Renee Slegers praised her side’s stirring comeback in their 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.

Slegers’ side headed into the clash at the Emirates Stadium 2-0 down after losing in Madrid last week on a pitch that sparked controversy for its sub-par quality.

Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey rectified Arsenal’s shortfall early in the second half before Russo scored again to put the north London side ahead on aggregate.

“I think we have done really good things before, coming back from hard times, from setbacks or just really good performances for top teams but this is definitely one of them.” Slegers told a news conference post-match.

“I think this is the clearest one where you play an opponent away and the game looks like it does and the result is what it is.

“You go away a week after and you have to put this performance and this result forward. I think this is probably the clearest one.”

The Arsenal boss praised her players’ mental strength heading into the second half after failing to convert their chances in the first 45 minutes.
