BRONTE CAMPBELL AND MARCO KOCH ENJOY A GOLDEN NIGHT IN KAZAN
It was a golden night at the World Championships as Bronte Campbell and Marco Koch stood on top of the podium at the Kazan Arena.
Australian Bronte won the 100m freestyle with sister Cate in third, the pair sandwiching Sarah Sjöström of Sweden with the top five finishers all Arena swimmers.
Marco, of Germany, claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke while Radosław Kawęcki was second in the 200m backstroke.
Both Bronte Campbell and Cate Campbell have enjoyed healthy competition for many years and benefit from training together. Cate approached the 100m freestyle final as defending champion but Bronte led from start to finish and set a new personal best of 52.52, 0.18secs ahead of Sarah Sjöström with Cate third in 52.82. Bronte beamed: “I couldn’t believe it when I turned round and I saw 1 next to my name and saw the time as well. That is everyone’s dream: that is why you train, you want to be the best, you want to be the best you can be. And today I happened to the best in the world and that sounds really strange coming out of my mouth, truly surreal, it hasn’t sunk in yet.”
