SUPERFLY SARAH SOARS INTO THE RECORD BOOKS VAN DER BURGH AND PEATY HEAT UP FOR THE BIG SHOW OFF
At the FINA World Championship in Kazan the first day of swimming offered plenty of action for swimming fans in attendance and around the world.
Swedish Sarah Sjöström ignited the excitement by setting a new world record in the 100m butterfly – an incredible start to the 8 day competition.
Adam Peaty and Cameron van der Burgh traded blows like two heavyweight boxers in the 100m breaststroke semi-finals.
On the first night of competition, Sarah Sjöström set the ball rolling as she lowered the 100m butterfly world record to 55.74, slicing 0.24secs off the mark set by American Dana Vollmer at the 2012 Olympics.
Despite only being 21, it is the second time Sarah has held the world record having first flown into the history books back at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
She beamed: “Of course this record was meant to be broken. It was my plan all along – to beat a record at these Championships. I’ve had more competition in training because I race with the boys and this has helped.”
