Serena Williams tweeted in support of Alabama receiver Ryan Williams, but the two are not related. The tennis legend was joking about Williams being her “cuz,” facetiously claiming him as her family after the Saraland High School product caught six catches for 177 yards and had the game-winning touchdown reception with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter in Week 5.
Alabama had blown a 28-point lead and was down 34-33 when Williams made the most important play of his young career. The 75-yard touchdown and a subsequent two-point conversion sealed the deal for the Crimson Tide against Georgia.
Had Williams not made that miraculous play, and Alabama failed to close the door on the persistent Bulldogs, there’d be a much different conversation being had right now.
Serena Williams probably wouldn’t know of the 17-year-old phenom, and Kalen DeBoer would be the scapegoat for Tide fans’ anger.
