Angel City’s Savy King underwent surgery after collapsing on field, prognosis ‘excellent’

Date:

Angel City defender Savy King underwent a successful surgery Tuesday to address a heart abnormality, the team announced, days after King collapsed on the field during Friday’s match against the Utah Royals.

“She is now resting and recovering surrounded by her family, and her prognosis is excellent,” the team wrote in a statement Tuesday.

King received on-field medical attention about 74 minutes into the game at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, before staff transported her to California Hospital Medical Center. She later had surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

After an emotional pause lasting about 10 minutes, the game resumed, with Angel City winning 2-0. The NWSL said King left the field in stable condition and that the choice to resume the game followed league protocols, but some players and coaches questioned the decision.

King, 20, joined Angel City this season following a trade from Bay FC.

“On behalf of our entire family, along with Savy, we have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans, and community, as well as soccer fans across the country,” King’s family wrote in a statement released by the team Tuesday. “We are blessed to share Savy is recovering well, and we are looking forward to having her home with us soon.”
