Last week, Angel City FC faced disciplinary measures from the NWSL after they were deemed to have broken salary cap rules.
The sanctions included an immediate three-point deduction for the club, which saw them drop to 12th place in the league standings.
On Friday, Angel City faced off with Seattle Reign FC and triumphed 1-0 to secure three important points, reigniting their otherwise dwindling playoff aspirations.
Vignola makes the difference
Only a first-half finish from M.A. Vignola separated the two trailing NWSL sides at the Lumen Field stadium. Seattle Reign now falls behind Angel City, sitting in 12th position with the playoffs drawing ever closer.
Vignola’s crucial goal came about in the 34th minute of the match, thanks to a stellar assist from young star Alyssa Thompson. Vignola made an excellent run into the box to receive Thompson’s calm and collected pass before smoothly firing her shot into the back of the net.
Only the one strike was enough, and the visitors did just enough to hold off the Seattle side for the entirety of the game’s tense second half.
