Angel City FC has removed the interim tag from head coach Becki Tweed’s title to hire her to the role permanently, multiple sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic. The decision to hire her as the team’s manager was made Friday, and while one source cautioned that the requisite paperwork isn’t over the line yet, an official announcement is expected next week.
A spokesperson for the club did not respond to a request for comment.
Tweed took over Angel City FC in June following the team’s dismissal of Freya Coombe after a rocky start to the season (through June 14, the team only had two wins, three draws and six losses). Under Tweed as interim manager, Angel City made the playoffs, only dropping one game as a loss and adding six wins and four draws. While ACFC didn’t advance out of the quarterfinals against OL Reign, the second-half campaign was good enough to earn Tweed a nomination for NWSL coach of the year — the first time an interim coach has ever made the shortlist.
