Angel City FC has fired coach Freya Coombe, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic on Wednesday. The sources were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the decision before it has been made public. The decision comes halfway through the NWSL season with Angel City currently in 11th place, with only two wins, three draws and six losses.
A spokesperson for Angel City declined to comment Wednesday night.
Hired in 2021 ahead of Angel City’s inaugural 2022 NWSL season, Coombe kept the team in playoff contention for most of the inaugural season before an eighth-place finish (8–9–5) in 2022. Before heading to Los Angeles, she served as coach of NJ/NY Gotham FC, resigning early during the 2021 season after her planned move to Angel City was announced.
Only a few days ago, Coombe responded to a question concerning her job security following Angel City’s lack of results, telling reporters, “We’ve had a lot of turnover for whatever reason in terms of inconsistency, in terms of starting XI. I think building in a little bit of consistency is helping and I think the return to health of some players is also going to help bolster that. But I think right now we’re just focusing on the performances.”
