Anett Kontaveit to end her tennis career at Wimbledon

Anett Kontaveit has been diagnosed with lumbar disc degeneration in her back and the major health issue will not allow her to compete at the top level required to continue her professional tennis career. The Estonian will give it her all at Wimbledon and then hang up her racquet for good.

A year after achieving her career-high singles ranking of No.2, the 27-year-old Kontaveit writes on Instagram:

After several doctor’s visits and consultations with my medical team, I have been advised that I have lumbar disc degeneration in my back. This does not allow for full-scale training or continued competition. Therefore, it is impossible to continue at the top level in such a highly competitive field.

Currently ranked No.79, Kontaveit is the highest-ranked Estonian player in history. She has won six WTA titles and made the quarterfinals at the 2020 Australian Open.
