Former world No 2 Anett Kontaveit has withdrawn from the upcoming WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells, presumably due to a back injury. Kontaveit, who is just 2-4 at the start of the 2023 season, won’t be making her sixth Indian Wells main draw appearance this year.
After failing to make it past the Indian Wells qualifying event in 2016, Kontaveit made five consecutive main draw appearances in the desert between 2017 and 2022 – note, Indian Wells was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Kontaveit’s best Indian Wells result came in 2021, when he made the quarterfinal before losing to Ons Jabeur. Unfortunately, Kontaveit’s run of five consecutive main draw appearances in Indian Wells is coming to an end.
