Anett Kontaveit bids adieu to singles career at Wimbledon

Date:

Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit concluded her illustrious singles career after suffering a 6-1 6-2 defeat at the hands of Marie Bouzkova in the second round of Wimbledon 2023.

After 13 years on the Hologic WTA Tour, Kontaveit had announced that Wimbledon would be her last tournament due to her lumbar disc degeneration diagnosis. Thursday’s defeat to the 32nd-seeded Bouzkova marks the end of Kontaveit’s singles career, although the former world No.2 will stay in London, as she will play mixed doubles with Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori.

Kontaveit enjoyed her most successful tennis season in 2021, winning four titles. In total, she clinched six WTA titles, her first one, at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2017 being her most treasured career moment. Her other notable results include the 2020 Australian Open quarterfinals and becoming the first Estonian to qualify for the WTA Finals.

For now, the 27-year-old Kontaveit’s post-tennis plans include the continuation of her psychology studies at Indiana University. Moreover, she would like to go on some spontaneous trips, but would have to find some friends who don’t work, which is not easy. Staying involved in tennis is also a possibility, especially in Estonia, but there are no concrete plans yet.
