Andy Roddick isn’t optimistic at all about Coco Gauff’s chances of defending the US Open title as the American tennis legend doubts the 20-year-old can overcome her current woes in such a short time.
This summer hasn’t been the best for Gauff since the world No. 3 suffered a surprise round-of-16 at Wimbledon and she also failed to win a medal in her Olympic debut in Paris following a shock last-16 loss to Donna Vekic. On hard courts, it hasn’t been looking better for Gauff either as the world No. 3 lost had a round-of-16 outing in Toronto while also losing her opener in Cincinnati.
Last year, Gauff won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati before also becoming a Grand Slam champion at the US Open. In Cincinnati, the American tennis star stunningly lost to Yulia Putintseva in her first match and that’s how her title defense there ended.
If Gauff were to defend her US Open title, her path to the main glory may include Elina Svitolina, Emma Navarro, Barbora Krejcikova, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. And considering Gauff’s current form, 2003 US Open champion Roddick thinks it may be too much for the world No. 3 at the moment.
