Andy Roddick defends Venus Williams over Wimbledon wildcard criticism

Andy Roddick says there is no doubt that Venus Williams absolutely deserves her Wimbledon wildcard. Williams, 43, was recently awarded a main draw wildcard into Wimbledon. Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, is a five-time champion at The All England Club.

When Wimbledon announced Williams as a main draw wildcard recipient, many felt the organizers were just showing appreciation and respect for one of their great champions. But there were also those who were questioning why Wimbledon didn’t distribute the wildcard to a rising star.

“Yeah, but why should a tennis player that is ranked 697 in the world be given ENDLESS entries into main draws of tournaments?” a fan asked Roddick. Roddick responded: “Because she’s won that tournament 5 times, adds value to the tournament, and is Venus Williams.”

Roddick says Williams deserved her Wimbledon wildcard

Williams, who suffered a hamstring injury in January, was out for six months before returning to action at the start of the grass season in s’-Hertogenbosch.
