American tennis legend Tracy Austin was “impressed” by how Coco Gauff handled the pressure and expectations during her great run at Flushing Meadows. Even if Gauff didn’t win a WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and the Washington title, the pressure and expectations would have still been very high on the American tennis star in New York.
But after winning those two titles, the expectations and pressure got even bigger on the 19-year-old. Some thought that the pressure and expectations may be a bit too much for Gauff to handle but that wasn’t the case as the American ended up winning it all and lifting her first Slam after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Austin, a former two-time US Open champion, was just 16 years and nine months old when she became a Slam champion at Flushing Meadows in 1979.
