The America East women’s basketball conference has had a different champion for the past four years (excluding 2020).
Maine, UAlbany and defending champion Vermont have all won in the past five years and own 23 of the previous 37 championships. They entered the tournament as the top three seeds, respectively.
Those are the top three contenders in the tournament, as Maine only last two conference tournament games this year, while UAlbany and Vermont lost three and four, respectively.
All three schools have some of the best defenses in women’s college basketball. UAlbany allowed the fewest points per game among all teams this year with 51.2. Vermont finished third after the Catamounts gave up just 52.3 points per game. Maine allowed 57.0 points per game – 30th in the nation.
Maine’s Adrianna Smith is the top scoring threat to watch. She averages a conference-best 17.9 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. Bryant’s Mariona Planes Fortuny scores 15.6 points per game while UAlbany’s Kayla Cooper scores 15.2 points per game.
The semis now upon us only Maine, Albany, Vermont and Binghamton remain.
