Alyssa Thompson excels for U-23 USWNT in France – JWS

Alyssa Thompson scored a pair of goals to lead the U-23 U.S. women’s youth national team in its two-match series against France this weekend.

The 18-year-old earned her first caps with the senior national team in 2022. While Thompson has been left off the USWNT roster for its New Zealand trip in January and the SheBelieves Cup this week, she has shined for the youth squad during its European trip.

In the first match against France, a 2-0 win on Friday, Thompson opened the scoring with a goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Mia Fishel. Michelle Cooper, who went second overall in the 2023 NWSL draft behind only Thompson, scored the other goal.

The second match ended in a 1-1 tie, with Thompson providing the lone U.S. goal. Both matches took place at the Clairefontaine training center outside of Paris.

While Thompson had committed to play for Stanford, she decided to forgo her college eligibility to become the top pick in January’s NWSL draft. Angel City FC engineered a blockbuster trade to take her at No. 1 overall.
