World No 74 Alize Cornet reveals a shock win over Iga Swiatek at 2022 Wimbledon helped cheer her up as she was going through a rough time after breaking up with her boyfriend just a few months earlier. Last year, Swiatek came to Wimbledon riding a 35-match win streak that started in 2022 February.
After also winning her opening two matches at Wimbledon, Swiatek’s streak improved to 37 consecutive wins before Cornet claimed a shock 6-4 6-2 win over the Pole in the third round. Upon returning to Wimbledon this year, 33-year-old Cornet said she was “super-confident” against Swiatek as she knew the experience was on her side and also that the Pole wasn’t yet comfortable playing on the grass.
Cornet: Told myself someone had to break Swiatek’s streak
“Someone had to do it and it had to be me. That’s exactly what I told myself. Someone has to break the streak, and I have everything to do it on this surface. If it would have been in Paris or even the US Open, I wouldn’t be that confident, but I knew on grass she was not feeling comfortable yet.
