Rafael Nadal’s classy gesture moved Alize Cornet to tears as the Frenchwoman was deeply touched after seeing the 22-time Grand Slam champion take some time to send her a warm retirement message.
On Saturday, it was announced that former world No. 11 Cornet would be making a special announcement on Canal +. Since 34-year-old Cornet had hinted multiple times in the last two years that the end of her tennis career could be coming, it was widely expected that she would announce her retirement.
Exactly that happened as six-time WTA champion Cornet shared her plans to walk away from pro tennis after competing for one last time at the French Open.
At one moment, a video of Nadal sending Cornet a retirement message was played and the Frenchwoman got emotional over it.
“Bonjour Alize, I just want to congratulate you for an amazing career,” Nadal said.
“I just want to wish you the very best for whatever you decide to do in the future. You’re going to be – for sure – doing very well, but it’s your day, enjoy and all the best for the future, congratulations.”
