One of the biggest historical points of friction in the National Women’s Soccer League is now playing out more publicly as the NWSL tries to figure out its place in the global landscape.
The NWSL has a calendar problem with no easy or obvious solutions. That is not new, but it is more pressing than ever as FIFA pushes for new competitions and more regular international play based on a calendar catered to Europe. NWSL leadership realizes the urgency, too. Multiple sources told The Equalizer in recent months that the idea of shifting the league’s calendar to mirror Europe is being taken seriously, although the details require much more scrutiny and discussion.
Now, players and coaches are growing more vocal about the problem.
